This might sound crazy, but hear me out.
Cats love my feet. More specifically, most cats I have encountered are obsessed with the way my shoes smell. It’s like, well, catnip to them.
It all started with my best friend’s cat, Monte. Monte is an ancient, chubby tabby she rescued as a stray. To put it politely, he’s quirky. One of his favorite activities is sitting on the ottoman, staring you dead in the eyes, and yelling. We call it his whining stool.
So when he started getting overly friendly with my shoes three years ago, we didn’t think much of it. I’d go over to her apartment to watch American Horror Story and leave my shoes by the door. For hours, Monte would nuzzle, roll around on, and even stick his whole head inside my shoes.
Sure, it was weird. But he was having a good time and was so cute about it. We just chalked it up to typical Monte quirkiness.
Seriously. He can’t get enough.
But then something very strange happened.
For my birthday last year, I took a trip to Austin, TX and visited a cat cafe. Within minutes, I was completely swarmed.
One cat, two cats, three cats, four. They came from all over the cafe to get a whiff.
From then on, I noticed it happening all the time. Anywhere I went with a feline contingency, I was the belle of the ball.
I’m not sure what it is. I don’t have particularly malodorous feet and it only seems to be cats. Dogs don’t care one way or the other. It doesn’t matter the scene or type of shoes. The evidence is there.

If this is some sort of sign or bad omen, I’m choosing to ignore it. I’m mostly just honored that cats are into me.
