Friends Creator Marta Kauffman Says She “Didn’t Do Enough” To Promote Diversity On Sitcom

Now that Friends is reaching a new audience thanks to its presence on streaming services, many viewers are enjoying the classic moments but they’re also finding some moments to be problematic.

Well, the viewers aren’t alone as co-creator Marta Kauffman feels the same way. During a recent sit down at Tribeca Film Festival’s Friends 25th-anniversary celebration Kauffman admits that she “didn’t do enough” to promote diversity in the culture classic.

“I wish I knew then what I know today,” she said, before apologizing for welling up. “Sorry, I just wish I knew then what I know now. I would’ve made very different decisions.”

Kauffman admits that some episodes like the one where Phoebe falls in love with her twin sister’s stalker, are much harder to watch. Other cast members of friends admit that a show like Friends wouldn’t work in 2020.

Knowing what we know now about diversity, which show do you think deserves a reboot?
