Today on the Mix Morning Fix, I brought up how cute otters are because they hold hands when their sleeping to avoid drifting apart. Jon mentioned that the more you get to know about otters, the cuter they get.

Well.. I’m here to ruin that for you! Turns out, otters are actually terrifying nightmare monsters just like the rest of the natural world.
For starters, they eat a ton. Sea otters eat up to 25% of their body weight every single day. So what happens if food is short? According to the Aquatic Mammal Journal, Adult males will hold other otters’ pups hostage until they pay a food ransom.

On top of that, they have straight-up horrifying mating rituals. Male sea otters don’t wine and dine their ladies. They chomp down on the female’s face and force her head underwater, often resulting in torn flesh. They spin around under water until they’re done with “Netflix and Zero Chill.” The males will release and swim away. It’s estimated that 10% of females die as a result of this brutal mating ritual.

But this is basically Nick Jr. compared to what they do to other species. The male’s sexual aggression extends to other sea critters, a particular favorite being BABY SEALS.

That’s right. There have been multiple reports of sea otters forcefully copulating with baby seals for up to an hour and a half. Sometimes even long after the seal has passed away.
