Despite the fact that 3 out of 4 of The Golden Girls have been dead for nearly a decade, they almost made a cameo in one of this fall’s biggest family films.
Co-directors of Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet said in a recent interview with Yahoo! that our four favorite gals were set to appear in a scene where Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) come across the real-life Disney fan site, OhMy.Disney.
OhMy.Disney.Com is a one-stop shop for Disney nerds. The site is littered with articles, fan theories, listicles, clips, and quizzes about all your favorite characters and movies.
“As we were studying the OhMy.Disney website … The Golden Girls were weirdly prominent throughout,” Co-director Johnston told Yahoo! Entertainment. “They really lean in on that website to The Golden Girls. A lot of quizzes, a lot of lists…”
As such, Johnston and his co-director Rich Moore wanted to pay tribute to the site’s weird yet beautiful Golden Girls/Disney crossover. The planned out cameos for each Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia.
But alas, the plan ended up on the cutting floor.
“We threw it in the movie animatic and people were like, ‘What?!’” says Johnston.
“It was a little confusing,” adds Moore. “If you were not familiar with the website, it was a bit confusing.”
I know. I’m absolutely heart broken. But at least Johnston and Moore recognize their mistake.
“You’re asking my regrets when I’m on my deathbed? It’s that — that the Golden Girls are not in this movie” Johnston told Yahoo!
