During a backstage interview at the 60th annual Grammy Awards, Recording academy CEO Neil Portnow made a very controversial comment.
He was asked about the lack of female representation in many of the awards categories. His response?
“I think it has to begin with women who have the creativity in their hearts and their souls who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, who want to be producers, who want to be part of the industry on an executive level to step up” – Neil Portnow
There are so, so many things wrong with that statement. Number 1: The Step-up Comment.
The music world is powered by strong women. Dolly Parton, Adele, Cher, Britney, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Nina Simone… I could go on forever naming women whose music has changed the world.
And if there’s one thing you need to learn about powerful women, it’s that you should never piss them off!
