We Salt Lakers are no strangers to inversions; it’s an unfortunate part of life in the valley.
The phenomenon is caused when normal atmospheric conditions (cool air above, warm air below) become inverted. Inversions trap a dense layer of cold air under a layer of warm air. The warm layer acts much like a lid, trapping the cold air in the valley. Since we’re stuck under this layer, so is all the pollution we produce, which leads to horrible air quality.
When we hear the word “inversion,” we cringe! But not all inversions are bad, some are downright awe inspiring. Yesterday, the Grand Canyon filled will clouds, and it was breathtaking.
