Google says that you should buy your tickets early. Flights generally increase 75 days before departure and then again at 35 days till departure. So if you’re looking to travel for Thanksgiving it’s best to buy at the beginning of September.
Another tip google recommends is flying in/out on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Midweek flights are typically cheaper than any other days.
Google’s flight app shows historical prices so you know roughly how much you’ll spend based on what prices have been in the past.
