Chappell Roan Saddles Up for a Wild Ride with “The Giver”

After months of teasing, Chappell Roan has finally unveiled “The Giver”—a playful, country-infused anthem that pays homage to the genre’s golden era while keeping her signature theatricality intact. Produced by Daniel Nigro, the track marks Roan’s first release since last year’s viral hit “Good Luck, Babe!” Watch the music video below.

A “Cuntry” Moment, Not a Genre Shift

Inspired by boot-stomping classics like Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” and Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee,” “The Giver” channels the sun-soaked nostalgia of country music while adding Roan’s own campy, queer twist. However, fans wondering if this signals a full-fledged country pivot might want to hold their horses.

“I have such a special place in my heart for country music,” Roan shared in a press release. “I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus… at bonfires, grocery stores, and karaoke bars. But does this mean I’m making a country album??? My answer is… right now, I’m just making songs that make me feel happy and fun.” She cheekily added, “May the classic country divas lead their genre—I’m just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for y’all.”

That sentiment echoed her recent appearance on the Country Heat Weekly podcast, where she clarified that “The Giver” is more of a love letter to country’s roots than a full-blown career shift. “I wrote a country song not to invade country music,” she explained, “but to really capture what I think the essence of country music is for me—nostalgia, fun in the summertime, the fiddle, and the banjo feeling like country queen.”

A Rhinestone Rodeo

Roan originally debuted “The Giver” on Saturday Night Live last year, making a bold impression with a pink gingham leather ensemble by designer Zana Bayne—a cheeky nod to cowboy buckskins. The performance featured a whimsical green-screen backdrop of towering trees and animated critters, while a full band, complete with a fiddle player, brought the song to life in matching Western shirts.

Her latest release caps off a massive year, following her breakout success at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where she took home Best New Artist. While accepting the trophy, Roan used her platform to advocate for healthcare reform in the music industry, reinforcing her status as a rising star and a voice for change.

With “The Giver,” Roan once again proves she’s in a lane of her own—whether she’s a pop princess, a country queen, or somewhere in between.
