Dangerously Devoted: Mariah Carey Returns With a Hip-Hop-Infused Ballad
Mariah Carey is back, and she’s not playing it safe. With her first original solo single since 2019, “Type Dangerous”, the pop icon dives headfirst into the complexities of seductive, risky love. Released on June 6, the track previews her anticipated sixteenth studio album, tentatively titled MC16.
Built around a gritty sample of Eric B. & Rakim’s 1987 classic “Eric B. Is President”, the single fuses vintage hip-hop flavor with Carey’s unmistakable R&B finesse. Co-written with Anderson .Paak and Rae Khalil and co-produced by Carey alongside N.W.I. and Daniel Moore, “Type Dangerous” is a modern torch song wrapped in boom-bap beats and lush harmonies.
Mimi’s back—don't just read about it. Hear the drama unfold live Mix.
“This song has been in the vault while I’ve been working my behind off on new music,” Carey shared in a press statement. “I’m thrilled to finally release it to my fans!”
Lyrically, the track sees Carey weaving vulnerability with self-awareness—her character drawn to someone she knows she shouldn’t trust, yet can’t resist. The high-gloss vocals, layered over streetwise production, echo themes she’s mined before but with a rawer, street-level edge reminiscent of The Emancipation of Mimi.
The release follows Carey’s 2019 theme song “In the Mix” for the ABC sitcom Mixed-ish and high-profile collaborations with Ariana Grande, Jam & Lewis, and Jennifer Hudson. Now, with MC16 on the horizon, “Type Dangerous” signals a potential return to form—and perhaps, to chart dominance.
Mariah Carey: The Voice, The Vision, The Legacy
Since her 1990 debut, Mariah Carey has reshaped the soundscape of pop and R&B. Her five-octave range, melismatic mastery, and songwriting chops turned her into an unstoppable force of the ’90s music scene. With 19 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, she holds the solo artist record and remains tied with The Beatles overall.
From the blockbuster success of Music Box and Daydream to the critically lauded The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey has continually reinvented herself. She’s a five-time Grammy winner, a Hall of Fame songwriter, and a holiday season mainstay thanks to the perennial chart-topper “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
Beyond the accolades, Carey has become a cultural icon—an artist whose voice, vulnerability, and vision have inspired generations. With “Type Dangerous”, she adds another chapter to her evolving narrative: still daring, still distinct, and still undeniably Mariah.
