“Chainsaw Nun” the Hero We Never Knew We Needed

Most nuns don’t make a habit out of wielding a chainsaw. But when Sister Margaret Ann’s neighborhood was hit by Irma, she flew into action.

An off-duty officer from the Miami-Dade Police Department filmed Sister Margaret Ann hard at work, cleaning up debris left in the wake after Hurricane Irma touched down on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

In an interview with CNN, Sister Margaret Ann said that the road near the school she works at was blocked and she saw someone spin out of control due to the mud. So she went into the school’s supply closet, grabbed the chainsaw, and got to it.

“There was a need, I had the means, so I wanted to help out… We teach our students ‘do what you can to help,’ and so this was an opportunity for me to help.”

She went on to say that the officer told her not to worry and that the police would do it. She responded by saying that it would take too long and that it was too dangerous for the people in her community.
