Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes were last night, and Ricky Gervais hosted. People were already anticipating his trademark off-color comedy, but the reactions were pretty great. Here’s his opening monologue:
Mel Gibson was a presenter at the “Golden Globes” and they let Ricky Gervais introduce him. And he definitely let him have it. Ricky complained about how awkward it was for him to introduce Mel, since he’d made jokes about him at a previous ceremony. Things escalated pretty quickly, and NBC had to censor some of the dialog:

Here are some more highlights:
Ricky Gervais upset the Internet with some Caitlyn Jenner jokes during his monologue. He said, quote, “I’ve changed, not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously.” He also said Caitlyn’s done a lot to break down stereotypes, but, quote, “She didn’t do a lot for women drivers.”
Ricky was responsible for another awkward moment when he introduced Matt Damon as, quote, “the only person who Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.”
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet both won Globes, and they shared a hug that inspired everyone to make the same, tired “Titanic” joke about never letting go.

Jamie Foxx pulled a Steve Harvey by “accidentally” announcing the wrong winner of the Best Original Score award.
Jim Carrey reportedly went off-script while presenting an award, joking about being a two-time Golden Globe winner, but needing a third.
Sylvester Stallone got a standing ovation when he won Best Supporting Actor for “Creed”. But during his speech, he thanked everyone except director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B Jordan.
Some famous black people, including Samuel L. Jackson, called him out. But sources say he went back onstage during the break to correct the error. Obviously, that didn’t air.
Lady Gaga was probably the most emotional winner of the night. Like Stallone, she thanked a ton of people, but forgot someone important: her fiancé Taylor Kinney. And he was there. Gaga won Best Actress in a Limited Series for “American Horror Story”. And Leonardo DiCaprio’s reaction was priceless, when she bumped his arm on the way to the stage.
Tarahi P. Henson actually passed out cookies when she won Best Actress in a TV Drama for playing Cookie on “Empire”. Then she went off when the show tried to get her to wrap up her acceptance speech.
“The Revenant” was one of the night’s big winners, picking up Best Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.
“The Martian” won Best comedy, and Matt Damon got Best Actor in a Comedy for it.
Other winners included Jennifer Lawrence, Jon Hamm, Christian Slater, the animated film “Inside Out”, and the USA Network series “Mr. Robot”.

David Bowie Has Died
Well this was completely unexpected. David Bowie died yesterday at the age of 69. He’d had cancer for a while, but kept it pretty much a secret. They didn’t say what kind. Here’s what the official statement said. “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.” Obviously Bowie was a rock icon for over 40 years, and his career incorporated glam rock, soul, pop, and electronica. His big breakthrough was the 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”. That’s the one with “Moonage Daydream”, “Starman”, “Ziggy Stardust”, and “Suffragette City”. Ziggy Stardust kind of became his alter ego for a while too, the pale white makeup, the big orange hair, the weird androgynous outfits. And he had other personas and styles over the years. Basically he was doing a weird mixture of rock, art, and fashion 40 years before Lady Gaga. And that might have been as influential as his music. Believe it or not, he only had two #1 songs in America, “Fame” in 1975, and “Let’s Dance” in 1983. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and got the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He also did a bunch of acting: He played an alien in “The Man Who Fell to Earth”, a vampire in “The Hunger”, the Goblin King in “Labyrinth”, and Pontius Pilate in the Martin Scorsese movie “The Last Temptation of Christ”. More recently, he had a pretty big part in “The Prestige”, the movie where Christian Bale and High Jackman were rival magicians, and did a cameo as himself in “Zoolander”. His real name was David Jones, but he changed it so he wouldn’t be confused with Davy Jones of The Monkees. And he had a permanently dilated eye after being punched in the face in a schoolyard fight over a girl. He married the model Iman in 1992, and they were still together. They had a daughter, and Bowie had a son from a previous marriage too. His most recent album was “Blackstar”, and it just came out on Friday, which was also his 69th birthday. Get more here.
Was Justin Bieber Booted from Mayan Ruins for Mooning People?
Justin Bieber visited some Mayan ruins in Mexico last Thursday, and a local official says he and his entourage were, quote, “asked to leave” for not following the rules and disobeying security. The anonymous official says Justin hopped a fence and was climbing on ruins that he wasn’t supposed to. TMZ claims it was a little more dramatic than that. They say that Justin and his buddies were drinking beers while touring the ruins, that Justin climbed to the top of one of the structures and mooned everyone, That they were “hurling insults” at the staff on their way out, and that the police were called, although Justin was gone by the time they got there. Others say Justin’s pants fell down unintendedly which actually is a possibility, because there are photos of Justin with some dolphins from later that day, where his shorts are sagging below his backside. Justin hasn’t commented, but it’s hard to imagine he’d be asked to leave over an innocent mistake or misunderstanding. Get more here. https://youtu.be/ISe1h8CK4iM
Steve Harvey Will Have Miss Colombia on His Show Next Week
Steve Harvey says he’ll have Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, on his show next week. That is, unless he announced the wrong name, and actually meant that he’ll be interviewing Miss Philippines. This will be the first time they’ve come face-to-face publicly since last month’s Miss Universe debacle. No exact airdate has been announced yet. Ariadna recently conducted a poll on Twitter asking if she should do Steve’s show, and 72% said yes. Get more here.
